CHARM SCHOOL: How to master the art of conversation

by Leonore Dicker

Women are known to be great talkers but real ladies should be amazing listeners too. It is very important that you take the time to truly listen to your interlocutor and reply accordingly. Our piece of advice would be to hear what the person is really saying as opposed to what they are telling you.

It is essential to put others at ease and weave in all parties by establishing shared interests.

We strongly recommend that you avoid checking your phone when someone is speaking to you. Fight that urge to check your Instagram account and stay focused. If you’re in a public place, like a café or a restaurant, do not look around and scout other tables. Make eye contact with the person who is speaking and be attentive and engaging.

There is nothing more attractive than a cultured woman, so do make sure to keep up with current events and read literature as well as cultural magazines. The more “in-the-know” you appear, the more interesting people around you will find you. Be careful not to speak of topics that could upset your interlocutor though. It is important to be sensitive and thoughtful of the people around you.

Unless you’re with extremely close friends, avoid gossiping at all costs. There’s nothing less lady-like than a woman who constantly speaks of others.

And Remember:
- Don’t interrupt another person when he or she is speaking
- Don’t only talk about yourself and make sure to ask questions about your interlocutor
- Be polite and say “thank you” and “excuse me” when adequate
- Don’t raise your voice too high. It is important that the people you are with can hear you, but not everyone else around
- Don’t ask intrusive personal questions
- Don’t be too direct unless you are intimate with your interlocutor
