Chokers: The Do’s and Don’ts

Let’s face it, when it comes to trends, celebrity endorsements are uber important. Take the one-piece swimsuit for example; without the Kardashians, where would this Baywatch-meets-nineties trend be? Kim K was once spotted wearing it and the rest was history!

So it didn’t come as much of a surprise to us when the 90’s chokers resurfaced on the fashion scene. Once celebrities such as Cara Delevingne and Riri made it a sure thing in A-listed events, fashion enthusiasts were attracted to the trend like a moth to a flame and we can’t blame them really; chokers are divine!

They come in velvet, lace or gold and silver. They’re simply so glitzy. And so in. The nostalgic trend has reached its summoned peak this year with the most sought-out brands such as Chanel, Dior and many others as endorsers and shopping for it is as easy as finding a pair of jeans. But if you want to make a simple choker look effortlessly cool, then there are a couple of rules you should stick to.

Do take into consideration the type of neckline you’re wearing. Chokers work well with V-necklines, but wearing them with turtlenecks and whatnot is visual-terrorism.

Don’t wear a choker that is too tight. You don’t want your skin bulging out from both sides. Let it rest loosely on your neck instead for an effortless style.

Do pair your choker with a long necklace. Because yes, more is just enough!

But when you do layer your necklaces, make sure your choker is the most prevalent. Don’t make the mistake of attacking the eyes with statement necklaces. Instead, go for thin and discrete ones.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the width of chokers. You can go with a thin choker and you can also try out thick ones; whatever suits you best!

Do go for gold or silver chokers for a night out, as to highlight your neck in the savviest of ways!

Don’t pair you choker with bold earrings. Keep the focus on your neck and only your neck!

Do go for large chain chokers; they’ll spice up any outfit you might wear!

But most importantly, don’t go for the “dog collar” choker. Ever.
