Did You Know…Anna Wintour’s First Vogue Cover Was a Controversy?

Blonde bob, big sunglasses and bold glamor. Yes, Anna Wintour does have it all! So much so that she has become, over the years, one of the most influential women out there. But money and fame never alleviated her successful career, as she gracefully hopped from one print magazine to another.

With print journalism encrypted in her blood, she took on many positions throughout her life, from the fashion department of Harper’s Bazaar (Harper’s and Queen at the time) to US Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief. Rumor has it that the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” was based on her cold and aloof character, but the fact was ( and still is), Wintour was a source of fashionable power, who slowly made her way into fame and fortune. The blonde sensation is no stranger to an eccentric view of the world, but one thing’s for sure; her peculiar taste made her the woman she is today. And as her fashion quirk has gotten her to extreme levels of success, her first cover for US Vogue made quite the noise in the fashion world. Apparently, Wintour featured a model wearing Guess jeans and an encrusted Christian Lacroix jacket. The costume wasn’t part of the initial deal, as the model, who had gained a little weight, couldn’t fit in the skirt. And as everyone was all riled up just looking at the cover, asking if there was some sort of mistake, the world of Vogue took an unprepared – albeit wonderful- turn; a turn where it didn’t really matter if the model was actually looking at the cover, or if her costume was that of the magazine’s worth. What really mattered was its essence, because this time, the message was pretty clear; things were about to change, big time!

Loads of interpretations followed the ground-breaking cover, but hey, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?
