The inspiration behind Raf Simons’ collection was “Jaws”, and the hints were as clear as ever. For Spring-Summer 2019, the creative director sent out models – such as Doutzen Kroes and Kaia Gerber – walking on a blood red carpet, and sporting wetsuits and obviously, wet hair. The references came through the ever-so famous red beanie and illustrations of the movie’s shark.
The collection was chockfull of plissé skirts, shift dresses and of course, leopard pieces. There were models wearing graduation caps and wearing blazers that could only be described as sporty-elegant. Fringed wraps were used as scarves at times and as belts as other times, adding a certain zest to the already-rich collection. With a backdrop of the sea and a line that referenced the flora and the fauna as well, one could definitely understand Simons’ successful attempt at reuniting land and sea.
