Book of the Week – Dior, The Art of Color

Celebrating its passion for color, the House of Dior launches “Dior, The Art of Color”. The major names behind the House Makeup were invited to get inspired by 12 key shades illustrated in captivating photographs and compare them to great artworks. This book sees Peter Philips, Image and Creative Director for Dior Makeup, Tyen and Serge Lutens count their own creative processes and reveal the rich history that lies behind Dior Beauty.

The journey started in 1949, when the house’s colorful beauty history began with the first “Rouge Dior” lipsticks giving life to the New Look. In line with the same vision, Dior appointed Serge Lutens in 1967 as its first Artistic and Image Director for Makeup. In 1980, the house witnessed Tyen’s bold use of color and today, Peter Philips gives Dior Makeup a radically modern approach, following the footsteps of his predecessors in highlighting the importance of colors.

Created in collaboration with author Jerry Stafford and art director Marc Ascoli and published by Rizzoli, this book features 12 chapters that take us on a visit to these talented artists’ worlds. From white to silver, nude, pink, red, purple, blue, green, yellow, gold, grey and black, each chapter showcases a makeup look illustrated by a renowned fashion photographer such as Guy Bourdin or Richard Burbridge, forming a portfolio orchestrated by Peter Philips. Each color also recalls artworks by Malevich and Cocteau, Modigliani and Warhol, Rothko and Brancusi, as well as Buffet, Picasso, Van Dongen and Soulages.

In addition to being an invitation to discover the audacity that lies at the heart of Dior, this book is a reminder of the house’s vision that color always make women happy.
