Put the Right Ring on It

You know he’s getting ready to pop the question, and as exciting as that is, you’re worried he’s not going to pick the ring you really really want. Enter bestie (or whoever secretly told you he’s going to propose)! All you have to do is tell them all your wants and desires when it comes to that ring, and they’ll take care of the rest. But do you know what you really want? We ask because, not all the rings will look as beautiful on your hands as they appear to be in magazines, or in the display windows of your jeweler, or on the hand of your favorite celebrity. So here are a few tips to help you choose the right ring.

While choosing your engagement ring, you should take into consideration the length and width of your finger, as well as the overall size of your hand. Also consider the nail length and shape that you usually opt for because if you keep your nails long, they make your fingers appear longer and change the equation. And hey, don’t forget that your personal style and lifestyle also play a big role in this task as well!

Although long and thin fingers are perfect for most styles, the preferences are princess-cut and round stones, wide bands to complement the length of your fingers and if you wish of course, bold styles.

On the other hand, short fingers look great in rings with oval, pear or marquise stones. It’s also possible to choose a rectangular, emerald-shaped stone as long as it’s not too big.

And while slender fingers call for smaller stones and thicker bands that make them look wider, wide fingers require a style that doesn’t show too much skin on the sides of the ring. Since wide fingers give you more room to get creative with your engagement ring, choose big rocks in a wide oval, marquise, rectangular or emerald cut. As for the band, it should be medium to thick. Also keep in mind that angular or asymmetrical designs minimize the width of your finger.

For those who have fingers with big knuckles, thicker and heavier bands are your best options and choosing the perfect ring will surely draw the attention away from them.

Last but not least, there’s a golden rule no matter what your fingers look like: if your hands are small, keep the proportions of your ring small, while bigger hands look great in large rings.
