Keep Your Leather Bag…Safe and Sound

A good-old fashioned leather bag is perhaps one of the most classic bags you can ever lay your eyes and hands on. Only if you “lay your hands” on said bag with a lack of care and attention, it is bound to carry the wear-and-tear gene sooner or later.

On a very personal level, I could spend hours looking and contemplating leather bags, as I revel in their fine craftsmanship and that original smell of theirs. Indeed, there is a unique quality to leather bags that no other bag can pride itself with. And that’s enough reason to make us super cautious and wary when carrying our own little – or big – leather bags. Of course, there are perhaps one too many ways to make sure that said leather bag stays clean and in good condition, but we’ve rounded up a few tips and tricks to make this unpleasant task a little less…unpleasant.

  1. Great leather bags are a sign of true craftsmanship and boast la crème de la crème of materials and fabrics. And so, it would be blasphemous to let them rot without the proper attention and care. That said, every other day, take the time and make the effort to swipe the dirt off your bag with a dry cloth. Not only will it preserve the appearance of your bag, but it will bode well for its long-tenacity.
  2. There are many types of leather bags – from crocodile leather to full-grain – amongst other styles – but there’s only one way to make sure they all stay happily clean: bask them softly in the purity of a conditioner. And so, put a tad of conditioner on a soft cloth and dab it gently on your bag so as to keep its brilliance.
  3. Contrary to popular belief, leather is not always waterproof. So if it’s raining cats and dogs outside, please avoid parading down the street with your poor leather bag. Just use another one, won’t you?
  4. But if you’re very adamant on wearing it under the rain, then at least use a spray protectant.
  5. Also, when stashing your bag in your closet, make sure it is enveloped in its dustbag and more importantly, make sure it’s filled with newspaper so as to maintain its shape.
