Celebrating a Dior Icon, the Bar Jacket

An icon is a piece that stands the test of time and traverses all the trends that the fashion industry witnesses. With this in mind, Dior’s Bar jacket is certainly one of the icons of fashion that evokes the quintessence of Parisian elegance. Coming to life in 1947 thanks to the creative mind of Monsieur Christian Dior, this piece stands out by the extreme finesse of its cinched waist, its soft shoulders, its basques that accentuate the shape of the hips and its open neckline that adds unparalleled femininity to this timeless style fiesta.

Season after season, this example of eternal elegance keeps revealing its couture-worthy beauty through the celebrities that wore it at the industry’s most anticipated events. Part of the House’s permanent collection “30 Montaigne”, this emblematic piece finds its unique identity and audacity in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s designs. It’s tweaked and continually modernized to fit in the spirit of the collection it belongs to: more masculine lines, checks and denim effects adorned the Bar jacket for the Fall/Winter 2019-2020 ready-to-wear collection, while a black granite tweed version of it graced the Fall/Winter 2019-2020 Haute Couture show.

Made to embrace the woman’s body, the Bar jacket is still subject to reinterpretations. For the 2020 Cruise collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri joined forces with artists Mickalene Thomas and Grace Wales Bonner to bring to life new Bar marvels. Mixing between crochet and Caribbean embroidery techniques that use silk and hand-woven raffia, Bonner brought together vivid, warm shades and black embodying the intertwining of feminine and masculine style. As for Thomas, she highlighted the jacket’s emblematic curves with her colored collages. No matter what, the Bar jacket remains a reflection of Monsieur Dior’s ultra-modern visionary style, transcending generations to earn its place as an eternal fashion icon.
