How to Have a Messy Bun

When the bun trend started, I was happy to say it was a look I had already been sporting for years. Although I loved the ballerina looking sleekness of a bun, my love was mostly based on how to tame my unruly curls. I still feel like I haven’t quite perfected the look, so I decided to search for the perfect chic yet messy bun. There’s a thin line between looking like you are lounging at home and something trendy, so be careful. Follow these steps to make sure you don’t look lazy, since as we know, buns are actually a lot of work to perfect.

Start with dirty hair, yes dirty! Hair that hasn’t been washed has more texture therefore making it easier to style for an up-do. For added texture, use MoroccanOil Dry Texture Spray. Its amazing scent is reason enough for you to try it.

Grab all your hair and pull it to the area where you want the bun to sit. For a relaxed look, don’t tie your hair. Instead, start twisting and securing the bun with bobby pins. If you’re like me and think “there’s no way a few bobby pins are going to hold my hair up” go ahead and tie it in a ponytail.

Twist your hair and wrap it around. After this step, some people use another hair tie, but I think that’s what ruins the look. This causes you to have that donut look instead of a relaxed romantic one. You can use the ponytail hair tie as an anchor for all your pins. You might need to get some of those larger pins for a better hold. A couple of loose short pieces of hair give it that undone look. Et voila, le messy bun!
