Maria Grazia Chiuri really can put on a show and her interpretation of Dior’s Cruise 2019 show was the perfect testament to her creativity.
Indeed, for Dior’s 2019 cruise collection, Chiuri chose the Musée Vivant du Cheval à Chantilly to showcase the House’s collection, and had horses walk the runway alongside the models. And while the weather did not encourage the open-air location, the show continued in a perfect manner, proving to us yet again that Dior will prevail.
Now let’s talk clothes. The inspiration behind the collection was mainly the “escaramuzas”, also known as traditional Mexican women riders who have earned their rights to participate in the Charreada, an equestrian practice of performing challenging routines before a crowd. That said, the clothes merged the riders’ moniker clothes – full skirts, embroideries, bright colors, large hats and flowers – with Chiuri’s knack for modernity. The creative director’s love for strong women was mostly apparent through ample and extravagant skirts worn with fitted jackets and a high belt to accentuate the waists. Animal-themed bags, embroidered purses and hats and fine lace were all part of Chiuri’s lexicon; a lexicon she specially created to portray the greatness of female Mexican rodeo riders. Fine fabrics such as Toile de Jouy were revisited and upholstered with a series of wild animals, while lace garments were paired with black rubber boots.
There were tulle skirts and Bar jackets melting away in a series of powdery shades and pieces that highlighted Chiuri’s mission to overcome gender barriers. And a true Diorodeo show it was!
