Dior by Marc Bohan – A Look at Dior’s Rich History

Another addition to the seven books devoted to the designers who succeeded each other at the helm of Dior has been released, entitled “Dior by Marc Bohan”. Published by Assouline, the book takes its readers on a journey to Dior’s history, thoroughly exploring three decades of pure genius.

Indeed, the House’s rich heritage is developed by writer and journalist Jérôme Hanover, and documented through hundreds of images of dresses shot by LazizHamani along with archival photographs. And so, the portraits of a selection of forty creations unveil Marc Bohan’s inspirations as well as his relationship with the House of Dior. The author, who has met with Bohan numerous times, recounts the designer’s history, revealing that the legendary Christian Dior had offered Bohan in 1957, a position to work for him. But it was only after the death of Christian Dior that Marc Bohan became the House’s third Creative Director, showcasing his first autumn-winter collection, dubbed the Slim Look in 1961, and making way to an era of women dressed in an unrestrictedmanner.

“The silhouette is supple, slim, the shoulders are natural, the waist sinuous, the hips are very flat. The skirts flare gently in an alert movement and stop just below the knee,” the collection’s press release noted.

That said, from 1961 till 1989, Marc Bohan mended the bridge between fashion and art, putting into sight the most famous personalities of the time, such as artist Niki de Saint Phalle. He instilled a sense of discovery and freedom into the House’s creations, with one particular motto in mind: “To make sophisticated clothes simply, with a touch of insolence every now and then.”
