How often have you heard the expression “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue”, but remained completely baffled as to what it meant? How often have you reassured yourself that it was just superstition and that there was no need to dig deeper?

We don’t know about you, but looking at brides makes us want to slip into one those whitey-white thingies and get married- pronto! But since that’s not the case, we’ve decided to let you in on one of these dreamy bridal secrets! So where did this tradition come from?

It appears to have originated in the elegant roots of Britain, and more specifically from an old English-meets-Victorian rhyme “Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe”. Rumor has it that abiding by these rules is supposed to bring a bride good luck in the following ways: By wearing “Something old”, the bride is able to keep a bit of her old life with her. And in some customs, brides wear an old garter taken from a happily married woman as to live a joyous married life. The “something new” part alludes to the fact that the newlyweds are about to embark on a new successful adventure together, hence celebrating their union. Wearing “something borrowed” celebrates the gift given by the bride’s relatives and friends as a symbol of their undying love. Last but not least, “something blue” represents fidelity and a continuous marriage- clearly, something we all desire! So ladies, whether we believe in this tradition or not, we can’t possibly deny that it is a source of giggles and fun. And even if having these items couldn’t constitute a good basis for a happy marriage, one must admit that it’s an entertaining way to build up your wedding outfit!
