Did You Know…Why Brides Wear a Veil on Their Wedding Day

A wedding day is supposed to make a lasting impression on our lives. A romantic beginning to a lifelong journey. But what is now considered as a loving ceremony, was not necessarily quite as dreamy back in the day. And as if we haven’t heard enough oddness about wedding traditions and ancient celebrations, the world of brides hits us back with what may very well be the weirdest fact- ever.

So get this, brides wearing veils is not pure coincidence. No, no. This world-wide phenomenon stems from a Roman tradition stating that brides should cover themselves from head to toe with a red sheet, also known as a “flammeum”. Apparently, the so-called flammeum was meant to make brides look like they were on fire, hence warding evil spirits off – yes, again with the silly superstitions.

But that’s not even the weirdest part, as it appears to be that veils were specifically designed to weigh down on brides so they couldn’t run away on their big day (that designer truly deserves a medal for his/her ingenuity, right?).

We don’t know about you, but we’re kind of having second thoughts about that whole wedding-concept!
