Balenciaga Appoints New Artist Director – Fashion Prodigy, Demna Gvasalia

Paris Fashion Week is buzzing with the news of Balenciaga’s new artist director, fashion prodigy, Demna Gvasalia. The news comes just days after Alexander Wang’s boisterous final salute where he memorably signed off with an all white collection presented against Notorious B.I.G.’s Back to Cali – letting the world know the designer was ready to go back to his roots and focus on his eponymous label.

Gvasalia, who will take on the reigns at the French Fashion House effective immediately, will present his first collection for the brand in March 2016 for Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2016-17. Best known as the phenomenon designer behind uber-cool Parisian label Vetements, Gvasalia has made quite the name for himself in recent seasons. Coined as the freshest brand to come out of Paris right now, he and the collective (his brother, Guram Gvasalia, and several friends) behind Vetements were chosen as one of the eight finalists for the prestigious LVMH Prize this year.

The label’s raw street perspective takes basic wardrobe staples and reintroduces them with inventive appeal. Oversized mannish tailoring, floral dresses and biker jackets pay tribute to the label’s punk street-cred. It’s best known for taking recycled pieces of clothing and recreating astonishingly fresh designs, like their noted reconstructed jeans. The brand’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection, presented at Paris’ kitschy Belleville restaurant, had the same rebellious energy as the previous three collections, drawing significant fashion industry insiders and making it one of the most talked about shows of the week.

An emerging talent, whose innovation approach and raw sociological understanding of fashion makes him a rare gem in the creative world. Gvasalia, 34, has an impressive fashion background having worked at Maison Margiela under Martin Margiela for 8 years and at Louis Vuitton where he was senior designer for women’s ready-to-wear before starting Vetements. Now it is time for the exceptional young designer will head his own iconic fashion house.
